My younger daughter started college as "sustainable development". After an internship trying to move politicians and COBs, decided it was hopeless. Changed her major to creative writing and she wrote an apocalyptic book (in it's 4th edit, that she won't allow me to read) about how people deal with the actual end of the world. that
Kathleen Yasuda
39:26
That's as much as she'll tell me, but won't allow me to read it...

The specific list is very helpful. Thank you, Dr. Baghdaserians.

I'd like to add that we should help students understand that they are NOT alone in this. They are not "crazy". Also, the pandemic was also a sustained "traumatic event" for the whole world. Recognize that we're all dealing with a trauma
janice
46:58
That's the frustrating part that when we have 40 students is so hard to monitor that type of unusual behavior, but when I do They are literally crying for help. very very frustrating

One way we are trying to change the landscape for youth is to TEACH about climate crises in K12 schools. LAUSD passed a Climate Literacy Resolution. There is a moment, right now, when youth can affect what teachers will teach. Please email me if you are interested: climate.curricula@gmail.com

I think it is important to combine climate education with mental health resilience and address emotional issues - perhaps as a population based approach

We need start training or task sharing therapeutic knowledge to others (non-specialist) to provide mental health support within community.

Agree that Greta has opened up the convo is such an important way - saw an incredibly great interview with her just a few days ago - she is so herself and great seeing someone interview her with so much respect and humor which I do think helps with the mental anxiety that climate issues produce in us https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62ECkYYbPlA&ab_channel=RussellHoward

What are the connections between US history of genocide, enslavement, and colonialism and our destruction of the continent? And the extremism we have?
Lucy Garcia
02:20:09
I loved what Sim said that there are many people willing to welcome young people into political activism. And one of my more recent insights is that not all agents of change are activists on policy--there are artists who help us see the future, there are parents who teach a new way to be in the Earth, there are people coordinating businesses and agencies...everybody is creating culture at every moment.
