15:24
Welcome

16:07
Thanks Denise for sharing your insights with us!

18:01
I agree with Greta. We need to speak out and risk being unpopular.

20:20
How can we get finance to take into account the impact of climate change on the economy?

22:33
you can find resources on our SEI Website SEIlaccd.net

26:53
Everyone please change your name to your actual name, thanks!

27:58

52:46
I may have inadvertently hidden my image. Can anyone tell me how to unhide myself?

53:33
Turn on the Stop Video in on the lower left next to the mic.

54:07
Please submit our attendance for this worksop to the ELAC Professional Development Office, for us to receive our Flex credit.

54:40
Faculty went in through the VRC and got flextime that way.

54:52
Do you think the mainstream media casts doubt on climate solutions?

55:11
For faculty who registered through the Vision Resource Center, your FLEX hours should be in your account.

56:14
Recordings of this seminar and discussion will be posted on the Vision Resource Center and the Sustainable Environment Institute's website: www.seilaccd.net

56:28
MSM does a bad job of promoting renewables. They focus more on the dislocation that would follow the end of oil, coal and gas.

57:23
When we vote in November, are there resources for voting recommendations for people and policies that support climate solutions?

57:57
I am thinking about even New York Times, Washington Post, etc

59:26
@sharon. Sierra Club always releases its recommendations - with climate change as the primary focus

01:01:43
What is your source for "real" news?

01:02:53
When climate solutions become complicated it seems easier to cast doubt and dilute efforts

01:03:12
@Beth - thanks do they have recs disaggregated out by state?

01:05:27
@sharon- yes, right down to local offices

01:06:38

Read “Politics and the English Language" by Orwell.

01:15:26
@Craig that sounds excellent

01:15:53
yes! I totally understand that feeling

01:26:34
Is it possible to affect the money in politics that seem to work against public opinion that we need to do things about climate crisis? For example the challenge of passing the Build Back Better/IRA because of donations people made to Manchin, not to mention Republicans who universally don't vote for progressive climate legislation.

01:29:33
@Eugnie, we've worked on limiting money in politics and the Supreme Court blocks us every single time. I helped write legislation that was overturned by the courts and with Citizens United v. FEC it's made it even more difficult. I'm hoping we will have some changes in the near future but I'm not hopeful about the current court.

01:30:23
@ Denise thank you for sharing this and your work!

01:30:35
sure thing!

01:32:32
Question for Aris: are other agencies as bureaucratic as LACCD? We won't have EV chargers still until May 2023. I find it frustrating for how long it takes things to happen (you were wonderful and helpful though)

01:35:00
Question: Where do we need to go next with climate policy after IRA?

01:36:38
is the slow pace due to lack of people/staff?

01:38:18
thank you

01:38:28
From the unions perspective the district office staff issues are challenging. Fewer staff more retirements. Seeing this with health benefits and retirement units too:(

01:39:53
no one wants to work in education anymore lol

01:40:02
There seems to be a workforce issue with implementing climate solutions

01:40:22
@Niamh they should, it's truly the best job I've ever had. And the benefits are amazing

01:41:09
rewarding but tiring I bet

01:41:37
@Niamh K-12 is much more exhausting. community college is fantastic.

01:41:54
Thank you for a great workshop
