Hi Jemere
Chris Armstead
08:35
Why I didn't receive yet a Chromebook, and it's almost the end of the semester. Do you accept any student federal aid and or fee waiver that I'd recently send to financial aid office.

divestment is not relying on LAPD for backup . cutting ties from the police
Deborah Franza
16:15
Lisa, bad things can happen to everyone. However, POC are more likely to experience police brutality, and this is the focus on todays conversation (from my understanding).
Rachel Curry
16:19
Yes, what steps is LACC taking to divest in LAPD? Why is there an LAPD office ON OUR CAMPUS? Schools should be a safe space for learning, having a LAPD offie with thick glass window on campus feels hostile
Kaya Landingin
16:31
thank you jemere :)
lisa
16:31
are you asking for divestment of LACCD or the City?
PJ Christie
16:41
good points Deborah
Jemere Calhoun
17:08
my story is simply the story of America! Let’s write new chapter!
lisa
17:14
yes, but laccd has a particular history as well that I am acquainted with and I will not be silent on that issue.
Amy McRam
17:27
@Jemere AMEN
Rachel Curry
17:32
yes, Deborah I agree with your comments to Lisa, this is not a space for white folks to process of compare their experiences
megan nicole
17:53
Agreed Jemere - let’s write a new chapter!

Jemere, that is exactly what John Lewis said this morning . . .

Black peers still have assignments & deadlines to meet & possible pandemic issues that may have also come up. They are being forced to suppress their emotions in order to get their end of the semester tasks done. Will there be any accommodations put into place regarding finals/assignments?
lisa
18:06
Well, thank you Rachel, I will keep this in mind for that you are trying to silence white students.
Rachel Curry

we dont need or want reform. we want police off our campus now. the first day of classes I had my teachers tell us we can and should call school police if theres any "grievances" like unhoused folks seeking shelter walking around buildings. this is unacceptable to criminalize people in need like this
PJ Christie
19:09
AK, I disagree

It is no coincidence that our campus, placed in the center of a low income neighborhood populated by mostly people of color, is the one of the ONLY campuses in the state with its own Sherriff’s department. Our campus is unnecessarily militarized.

I believe hurt and pain begets hurt and pain to others. Let me tell you, there needs to be grieving processed right now- so much so for reform to happen. I was born and raised, but let me tell you, I've seen a lot of mistreatments as Asians, aka LA Riots. The Asians during this time suffered from this anger with violence and it was undeserved. There was no protection against this during that time. I tell you there is also a lack of education and acceptance...ignorance of historical Asian suffrages that are still present as well...I think every race has their history of oppression. I fight for every race and to learn about each other and to take what we see on the media or a bad instance as a grain of salt. To be conscious of forming our outlook and beliefs to take in the whole culture and race that live here in the United States and particularly in Los Angeles.

Keep challenging the status quo, as ASG President I have many productive conversations with our administration about the future. I believe the future of LACC is bright especially with Dr. Gallagher at the helm. We have a very long way to go but we have many who have the courage to have the uncomfortable conversations and actions. I beseech you all to continue to fight for justice and change and challenge the policy makers on campus and beyond. My time at LACC is coming to an end but my heart will forever lie here. I will continue to be an Agent of Change. I can be reached at jemerecalhoun@gmail.com and will be available in any capacity that I can. I wish love and peace into you all.

This meeting was very necessary and I would like to thank each person in attendance. Thank you President Gallagher for your love for all students. I hope we all can learn from this sad sad time. As a student during this entire pandemic started effecting me personally because all I heard was how it was effecting black people. We need to address black on black crime in are neighborhoods, change in are lyrics in rap music so that black people can show everyone that we are" Excellent People" but because of what White American has done for years to black people others think of us the same way. Let's stop violence for everyone. We can do this together Black People Are Hurting in many way just because we are black.

Please do not lump all LAPD based on the ones who are doing badly and harming - I do think those who are should have consequences and be held accountable. I do believe there needs to be better hiring and accountability for bad conduct and training. Sometimes keeping these bad officers are only a harm to LAPD and the community it is trying to protect.

01:05:48
In my experience, it is extremely difficult to start a club at LACC. Can we make the process less extensive so that we as students will be more motivated to organize and come together? When I tried to start a female + queer + POC students in film club I was so overwhelmed at the process. If we promoted clubs on campus more and made it more accessible to start one, students would be more organized and speak as a whole instead of sparse individuals, and therefore implement change by having a greater impact on the president and board.
